The firm

Whose side the broker is on.

Aldergate is an independent insurance brokerage. We act for the client, not for an insurer, and we do not underwrite any of the cover we arrange.

Position

How the firm is positioned

A broker sits between two parties with different interests. The insurer prices the risk it has been shown; the client lives with the wording that results. Our work is in the space between those two things, making sure what was described is what was underwritten, and that the client understands the conditions attached.

We are not an insurer and do not carry risk. Every policy we arrange is issued by an insurer that accepts it on its own terms, and that insurer decides claims.

We take a deliberately narrow view of what a website should assert. We publish no ratings, no client counts, no settlement statistics and no savings figures, because figures of that kind are only meaningful when they can be verified. What we will state is how we work.

How we work

Exposure first
We establish what could go wrong and what it would cost before discussing which insurer might take it.
Written presentations
Risks go to market in writing so that what was disclosed is a matter of record, not recollection.
Conditions drawn out
Warranties, conditions precedent and material exclusions are set out in plain language when terms are presented.
One adviser
The person who placed the policy handles the year, the renewal review and the claim notification.

Remuneration

Brokers are generally remunerated by commission paid by the insurer out of the premium, by a fee agreed with the client, or by a combination of the two. Which applies to your policy will be confirmed to you in writing before the cover is placed.

If you would like the arrangement for your own policy explained before you commit to anything, ask. It is a fair question and there is a straightforward answer to it in every case.

Undertakings

What we will not say

  • That a policy will be cheaper than the one you hold.
  • That a claim will be paid, or paid within a stated time.
  • That cover is in place before an insurer has confirmed it.
  • That a summary on this website describes the terms of your policy.
  • That we hold appointments, ratings or credentials that have not been shown to you.
